Preliminary Woodbury County Fair Queen judging was held at Theo's in Lawton on Monday, July 14th. Final judging and results will be announced at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30th at Flathers Hall at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds in Moville.
Contestants are judged on personality, poise, community service activities, leadership, and citizenship. The queen will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Each princess receives a $500 scholarship, and Miss Congeniality receives a $250 scholarship.
The royalty will reign over the 2008 Woodbury County Fair and take part in several local parades during the summer of 2009.
Sydney Brady is the 18 year-old daughter of Nate and Tammy Brady of Sioux City.
During high school, Sydney was involved in Cross Country, National Honor Society, and Track. She has been a 4-H member for nine years in the Lil’ Britches and Banner Boosters 4-H Clubs. Currently, Sydney is serving as the Woodbury County Council’s Secretary. She enjoys showing rabbits and chickens at the fair.
In the fall, Sydney will be attending Iowa State University majoring in Agricultural Engineering.
Kalifornia Gray, is the 17 year-old daughter of Cindy and Bob Gray of Sioux City.
She is a recent graduate of Lawton Bronson high school and will be a freshman at Morningside College majoring in Business and minoring in Spanish.
She has been active in softball, volleyball, track, drill team, basketball, choir, show choir, student council, Leadership Academy, JEL, Dare Role Model, and has been in 4-H for nine years.
Brittany Kelly, 18, is the daughter of Scott Kelly and Michelle Kelly, both of Lawton.
Brittany is a recent graduate of Lawton Bronson High School and will be attending the University of South Dakota and majoring in Dental Hygiene this fall.
While in high school, Brittany was involved in volleyball, basketball, choir, show choir, drill tem, student council, 4-H, National Honor Society, and she took four years of Spanish. She is a member of the Silver Spurs 4-H Club and has been in 4-H for nine years.
Shelby Perez, 16, is the daughter of Alex and Julie Perez of Moville.
In the fall she will be a junior at Woodbury Central High School.
During the school year, she is involved in band, drama and speech. Outside school, she has been a member of the Arlington Future Farmers 4-H Club for six years.
Shaelie Rilling is the 17 year-old daughter of David and Cindy Rilling of Moville.
Shaelie will be a senior at Woodbury Central this fall.
Shaelie is very active in Dance team, choir, show choir, track, soccer, student council, and school plays. She is also involved in 4-H, her church youth group, and Woodbury County Junior delegates. Shaelie works as a lifeguard at the Moville Pool.
She plans on attending a four-year college to major in Journalism and/or Political Science.
Kayla Sands is the 17 year-old daughter of Wayne and Joyce Sands of Moville.
This fall she will be a senior at Woodbury Central.
She has been active in flags and cheerleading. She is a current member of the National Honor Society and a member of 4-H for eight years. She plans to show her horse at the fair in halter and showmanship classes. Outside of school and 4-H activities, she dances at Diane’s Dance in tap and jazz.
Emily Todd is the 17 year-old daughter of Stan and Deb Todd of Cushing.
She will be a senior at River Valley High School.
She has been active in volleyball, basketball, track, drill team, choir, speech & drama, and National Honor Society. She has been a member of the Rock-Kee-Union 4-H Club for eight years where she has been Treasurer for the past two years. At the fair, Emily shows her two horses and swine, and helps her other club members and friends.
After high school, Emily plans to attend Iowa State University and major in Animal Science.
Jessica Wade, 16, is the daughter of Richard and Colleen Wade of Sioux City.
She has been an active member of the Woodbury Westsiders 4-H Club for the past seven years. She is involved in S.T.A.R.S., Challengers League, Relay for Life, and Sleep out for the Homeless. Her favorite hobbies are photography, rock climbing, and most of all, horseback riding.
Jessica’s future plans include attending Iowa State University and majoring in Veterinary Science.
Jennifer Wilson is the 18 year-old daughter of Chauncey and Deb Wilson of Anthon.
Jennifer is a recent graduate of MVAO High School, and will be attending Morningside College this fall majoring in Physical Therapy.
During high school, Jennifer was involved in volleyball, softball, wrestling cheerleading, was FFA secretary for two years, and a 4-H member. She was also involved in Destination Imagination, Future Problem Solving, Gold Club, National Honor Society, band and the TAG program. She has enjoyed showing her horses at the fair for many years.
Kara Zenor is the 19 year-old daughter of Tim and Sandy Zenor of Lawton.
Kara is a recent graduate of Lawton Bronson High School. This fall she will be attending South Dakota State University with a Nursing major.
During high school, Kara was involved in volleyball, yearbook, County Council Treasurer, Farm to City, Studio Dance, 4-H, and on the Honor Roll. Kara is the Banner Booster 4-H Club President and at the fair shows horses, cow/calf, and market beef.
