The Unseen Graduate
The graduates come down the aisle
Step by step to Pomp and Circumstances
One we do not see, but he is there.
In memories of hearts and minds.
He's earned his diploma.
He's been in class all year
The teachers remember his work.
With every assignment, every activity
You could hear the thoughts in their minds
"This is the way Alex would do it."

Jaime Oberg's Commencement Speech

Classmates, this year I am going to give a little different spin. I want to make each of you a cheerleader. I looked up the definition of a cheerleader and found out that a cheerleader is one who encourages support for ones team. He or she is an uncritical enthusiastic supporter. A cheerleader's job is to get the crowd energized, make noise, intimidate the other team, and to make it look easy and fun. The cheerleader's job adds excitement, entertainment, and motivation. Have you ever wondered: who is your cheerleader? Your guests with you today, of course. But who else should be your cheerleader?
Do you even need a cheerleader? Everyone needs a cheerleader that includes you, your parents, and every other person in this room today. Your most important cheerleader should be YOU. Are you your most uncritical enthusiastic supporter?
You must understand that everything come from within. You are born with the power of thought. If you can have more positive thoughts, less self-limitations, and less outside limitations, you can and will be your own best cheerleader.      Whether you are a student or adult it helps to know what you are working for. What do you want? You know, adults can have as many questions about life going on in their head as you do.
Ok, try to find what you are working for. Starting with a list always helps. Youshould title it "What I Want." I have many things on my Want List. Actually, I started working towards what I wanted, by starting a "What I Don't Want List."
I don't want to be a smoker. I don't want to do drugs. Personally, I don't want to work on an assembly line, I don't want children before I am married. And I definitely don't want to have to move back in with my parents. As time went on I slowly started adding items to my want list. I want to be a pharmacist, and live in a rural area. Along with several more items on my want list.
Think big and creatively. Add details. From the very basic, I want to graduate today. To I want to get married and raise a family to, I want to own a brand new burnt orange Mercedes LS 500 hard top automatic convertible, and park it in one of my six car garages attached to my 12,000 square foot house which has big white columns in front and a heated swimming pool with a gorgeous garden and the best Chinese chef a person can find.
Even though it may seem tough to get your lists started, start one. It all starts with IMAGINATION. The toughest part is getting rid of LIMITATIONS, which leads to my doors story.
I need everyone to picture themselves in a large hallway which has door after door, after door, after door. At first you are terribly overwhelmed. Which door is right for me?
Which door do I dare enter because who knows what is on the other side? You see one door and it says college, MMMM, now that's simple enough you think. You enter but see again door after door, after door, after door with labels like junior college, state college, private four-year college, tech school, business school, local school, out of state college. MMM...I walk through the four year far from home college door. And now I face doors labeled with education, physchology, art, sociology, one music, and one pharmacy and on and on and on.
Ok, maybe there are some of you who don't even hesitate at this step. I choose the door titled pharmacy, but whatever door you choose will not be the last door of opportunities. You walk right in, giving the door a hearty thrust, almost expecting to see another hundred pluss doors. You see just a handful. You now confidently, walk right up and start reading the labels.
Questions start to pop up. Your decision making is taking longer. There is much to ponder for some and it is much easier for others.
The titles on the doors in the new room are a little confusing. You read on. Get married is on one door. You think Whoooaaa. Where did that come from? The next one says "children," one says, "get married first and then finish school." Well, you've learned one lesson - to read the entire door! Another door says "Move back Home!" Watch out parents that door is in every room!
No matter which door you go through, you can walk freely in and out. Once you've opened that door you can travel back and forth because you will always have the experiences of traveling through that door.
I want you to try and open as many doors as possible in your lifetime. Broaden your horizons, mentally and literally. Get to know and respect as many people as you can. Don't Ever Close A Door! The door you close may be the door that holds your dreams.
Under your chair I have placed a key. Please get that key.
Each Key has a different cut. No one will open exactly the same doors. Even though many of you are in the same stage of life right now, one will open the exact same door.
The key I have given you doesn't open any of the doors that I talked of earlier. The key you have opens just one door and it closes one. Wait! I just said Don't Ever Close A Door. That is don't ever close a door after today.
The ONLY door you can ever lock, we are going to lock today. Once locked, you will never be able to open that door ever again. We have locked the door labeled LIMITATIONS.
It is locked now and forever. From now until the end of time you can never, ever open that door again. This door that says LIMITATIONS is closed forever.
The key I have given you has one more job. It needs to open one door, one door only. The door to your future. To open this door you must be brave. It will prove to be exciting and very unpredictable. To open this door only takes the key you hold in your hand right now.
It opens the door labeled IMAGINATION. As long as you keep this door open, you will have all the keys to open any and ALL the other doors you wish. Now it is up to you. Just keep the door to your imagination open and any and every door you want to open, YOU WILL open.
Congratulations, Class of 2007. Let's open the door of imagination. Thank you.
