Seuntjens Takes First Place in AOMV Spelling Bee

Thirty-seven middle school students, one by one, stood in front of their peers and took turns in the challenge of spelling in the annual spelling bee. As a participant misspelled a word, he/she joined the rest of the student body in watching the competition. Finally, it came to Lynsey Seuntjens and Maura Matney. The duo went through several rounds before Maura faltered and Lynsey spelled "salmonella" properly to take first place. After the two were announced as first and second, Jesse Sturgeon and Kevin Bruning took their time to determine third and fourth places; the two had been knocked out of the race for first earlier in the morning. Jesse succeeded in taking third place and will join Lynsey and Maura at the regional spelling bee in Sioux City.

The students in Mrs. Lori Berning's AOMV eighth grade language arts class were challenged to write an essay on the theme "Why I Would Say No To Alcohol and Drugs." From the 67 students, 3 were chosen to advance to district competition. Madison Walsh, daughter of Jody and Michelle Walsh of Mapleton, Stephen Malloy, son of Virgal and Julie Malloy of Anthon, and Lakkin Schoenherr, daughter of Kirtus Schoenherr of Mapleton were the winners. They each received a $15 check from the proceeds of previous year's winnings of $100 which is given to the schools of the winners. The checks were presented at the monthly student council assembly following the spelling bee. Their entries will be judged at district competition, and winners will be announced in May.
The essay contest is sponsored by the Iowa State Reserve Law Officer's Association.

At the end of each quarter the students at Maple Valley Elementary gather to honor those who reached Accelerated Reading milestones. After a student reads an Accerelated Reading (AR) book, he/ she takes a test to analyze his/ her comprehension of the story. As the books increase in difficulty, so do the points. As students pass 100, 200, 300 etc. point milestones, they earn gifts from the school.
Here are the milestones and awards from the second quarter.
